Hidden Biodiversity – EssilorLuxottica Summer Camp
New lenses to observe biodiversity
Seeing is often a spontaneous, almost involuntary act: it simply happens when our eyes are open.
Observations, however, goes beyond sight: it means pausing, paying attention, and reading the details to truly understand what surrounds us.
As part of the EssilorLuxottica Summer Camp, the collaboration with Sea the Change adds a new dimension to youth education.
more than 1,600 young participants involved over six weeks
Over six weeks between June and July 2026, more than 1,600 young participants will be engaged in an experience designed to open their eyes to the marine world and transform their way of seeing into active, conscious observation.
From seeing to observing
Led by a marine biologist, the activities focuses on uncovering hidden marine biodiversity: forms of life that often remain unnoticed by those who simply “see.”
The invitation is to slow down, observe more closely, and ask questions.
The beach is an everyday place for some, a holiday destination for many, and a playground for the participants in the Summer Camp. Yet it is too often perceived as a mere backdrop, rather than a living environment on its own.
Making visible what usually remains invisible
The goal of Hidden Biodiversity is to make the invisible, visible, to reveal hidden biodiversity through its traces and through the eyes of those who explore it, sparking curiosity, awareness, and a deeper attention to the marine world.
Knowing it is the first step toward learning how to protect it.
A collaboration to educate through sustainability
The gadget given at the end of the activity is a bookmark made from seaweed paper, FSC™ certified, recyclable, and biodegradable. First developed in the 1990s following the unusual proliferation of algae in the Venice Lagoon, seaweed paper is now produced by harvesting excess algae from marine environments and offers a sustainable alternative to traditional paper.
