Human activities are greatly endangering the health of marine ecosystems. Every year between 4 to 12 million tons of plastic end up in the seas causing about 80% of its pollution.

Without targeted measures and a rethinking of the approach to these materials, it is estimated that by 2050 the weight of plastic in the sea will exceed that of fish. Not only that, plastics endanger the lives of aquatic wildlife by causing their death as well. In their degradation process, plastics release many pollutants and microplastics that, through the food chain, reach our tables. Added to this are the effects on the lives of people who live and work in close contact with the sea.

Yet the sea is one of our strongest allies in countering the action of climate change: the seas and oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface and remove from the atmosphere about ⅓ of the CO2 emissions absorbed annually by ecosystems. This is due to two natural mechanisms: the diffusion of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into water and the photosynthesis cycle of phytoplankton and algae.

However, the worsening health of the seas caused by human activities and the effects of climate change have serious consequences on the life of these ecosystems; contributing to their degradation and reducing their ability to absorb carbon dioxide.
